Creating a Better Future for New Zealand

As a country, New Zealand has some big choices to make and the Pounamu Foresight Engine game offered the ability to explore hundreds of paths forward. After a successful first run in June 2012, sponsors ran a second Pounamu game in August 2013.

In addition to the standard individual players, this time classrooms of school kids played as teams. There were also public playing hubs in libraries, museums and other places around New Zealand where players could drop in and get the hang of playing and share the experience with others doing the same.

Pounamu asked New Zealanders to consider the following questions:

With the new tools generated by science and technology, imagine the possibilities! How do we treasure and build on what we have—our land, people, knowledge and connections—to create prosperity, good health, sustainability, resilience and accessibility for all New Zealanders?

What will you create? Who will you work with? What will you invest in? What problems will you solve? What will you change?

Pounamu 2013 was a collaboration between the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, StratEDGY Strategic Foresight and Professor Shaun Hendy, winner of the Prime Minister’s Science Media Communication prize and author of Get Off The Grass. The game was run with the support of the Institute for the Future on our Foresight Engine.
