Future of the Hospital Game + Report
Future of the Hospital: Foresight Engine Game & Public Analysis Report
For 24 hours, from 9 a.m. on January 8 to 9 a.m. on January 9, 2013, the Institute for the Future (IFTF), with financial support from our Health Horizons members as well as outside organizations including the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) and Guidon Performance Solutions, hosted a thought experiment called Future of the Hospital. Designed as an open, nonpartisan, online environment where ideas about how to reinvent the hospital in the United States could be freely explored and developed, Future of the Hospital aimed to generate fresh thinking about the hospital through fostering an online discussion that was participatory and future-oriented.
Future of the Hospital was run on IFTF’s Foresight Engine, an online crowdsourcing platform designed to engage people from all over the world in participatory forecasting. Foresight Engine involves a three-step process of scenario development, community engagement in creation of microforecasts, and analysis of themes emerging from those forecasts. Prior to game play, players were first immersed in a video scenario that illustrated how the current hospital model is unsustainable and in need of reinvention. Then three challenges were launched to drum up excitement and increase participation in the Future of the Hospital game.
Game Statistics
During game play, more than 600 people from five continents—North and South America, Asia, Europe, and Australia—participated. Players included hospital executives, architects, nurses, doctors, and computer scientists. They generated more than 4,500 ideas—brief, 140-character brainstorms—about how we can reinvent the hospital.
