Food Web 2020: Report + Map

"Food is our common ground, a universal experience." —James Beard

We all eat. It's not just that we all eat, but everything we do leads back to food. Food systems are integral to our society and the feedback-laden changes we see building on one another will shape our collective future.

Over the past 60 years, we have seen radical transformations in our food system that have leveraged more specialized roles—more complex and connected relationships—to dramatically increase productive capacities. In the next decade, forces from environmental constraints to increased capacities of small-scale actors and communities will push toward more hybridized systems incorporating different values, practices, and demands.

This food web is emerging in a world fraught with dilemmas, beginning with the enormous challenge of meeting world food demand under worsening environmental conditions. These dilemmas provide the context for our Food Web 2020 map, which provides an inter-connected view of the next decade in food. The map identifies the critical foresight that will demand strategic responses from your organization and other stakeholders in the food system.

How to Use the Interactive Map

The GFO Food Web 2020 interactive map was created with the Prezi zooming presentation editor, which will run on either a Mac or PC without any additional software. To download and read the report:

  1. Download the file "Food Web 2020 Interactive Map (Flash)." This is a .zip file that will automatically expand on your computer. (If this isn't automatic, please locate your download directory and the .zip file, then open the zip file.)
  2. Locate and open the file "FoodWeb2020_PreziMap" within the zipped file This will open a high-level view of the Food Web 2020 map.
  3. To navigate through the map, move your cursor to the bottom right corner of the FoodWeb 2020 map, where you will find arrows that you can use to advance the map. You may also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate forward and backward.
  4. Navigating forward will take you through a pre-programmed path through the story of the Food Web. This will take you through the disruptions to the food web, a series of innovative responses from around the world that are reshaping the food web, and a set of forecasts describing the future of the food web in 2020 that emerge from these disruptions and innovative responses.
  5. If at any point, you would like to see the high-level view of the map, you can do this by clicking outside of the central element in the middle of the screen. (Clicking on "white" space will bring you out of the zoomed view into the next level).
  6. If you would like to return to a specific part of the map, you can do this at any time by clicking on the element.
