IFTF Second Curve Internet Speaker Series with Eric Klinker—May 20, 2015

#reinventthenet [Powered by the Ten-Year Forecast]

Recent trends indicate a race toward centralization of the Internet, consolidating control into the hands of a few gatekeepers. But what if more of the Internet worked like BitTorrent?

This would be an Internet truly powered by people, one that lowers barriers and puts the future in the hands of many instead of the hands of a few.

In this talk, BitTorrent CEO Eric Klinker discussed just such a distributed web and how it has the potential to help address some of the most vexing problems facing the Internet today. How can we keep the Internet open? How can we keep access to the Internet neutral? How can we better ensure our private data is not misused by large companies? How can we help the Internet scale efficiently for content?

About Eric Klinker

Eric is President and CEO of BitTorrent, Inc., and has two decades of networking and technology experience. As CEO, Eric is responsible for an ecosystem of software, devices, and protocols that moves between 20% and 40% of the world's Internet traffic on a daily basis, and has more than 170 million monthly users worldwide.

He previously served as CTO and Vice President of Engineering at Internap Network Services and CTO at netVmg, acquired by Internap. Eric was also an early builder of broadband networks and a pioneer in network optimization technologies. In various roles with [email protected] Network, he was instrumental in the development of the world's first large-scale broadband ISP. Prior to that, he led engineering teams at the US Naval Research Laboratory focusing on information security, high assurance computing, and multicast data communication. Eric has authored numerous networking patents and routinely advises technology companies on ways to make the Internet work more efficiently.

About the Second Curve Internet Speaker Series

This event is part of IFTF’s Second Curve Internet Speaker Series, an exploration into the critical elements necessary to reinvent the Internet, stemming from our 2014 Ten-Year Forecast research. The series gathers leading minds together with IFTF’s deep experience thinking about technology and the ways of communicating, coordinating, and organizing in the changing world around us.
