why have a baby in China?
It seems that the reasons for having a child in China are changing, according to a recent study done by a Beijing research firm.
Remarks like "we love children" and "a baby is the crystallization of our love," represent the main reasons why couples have a child, rather than "my parents want grandchildren."
All of the Chinese families we are interviewing for our global project on family daily life have a single child, and they're already spending all they've got on their child's future. This pronounced shift in perceptions of a child's role signals a rapid increase in the nuclearization of the Chinese family. When baby is there to make *me* happy rather than my parents, that means that I need to be more involved in baby's life. Less reliance on grandparent childcare, more women staying home to take care of junior, and more services for the mommy-and-me market are likely to follow.
