Technology Horizons Fall 2016 Member Retreat: When Everything is Media
IFTF's Technology Horizons program members will join us for the Fall Research Retreat, New Experiences of Ambient Communications: When Everything is Media, on Nov 2-3 in Palo Alto, California.
We are moving towards a world where we can reach almost anyone for almost any reason. Even today as we are grappling with the complex opportunities and challenges of such interconnection, we can see a decade from now where our abilities to communicate—find an audience, enlist an object, share an emotion at a distance—are increasing by orders of magnitude. The rapid deployment of the Internet of Things, advances in network speed, and emerging immersive media platforms are transforming our communications experiences.
Communications infrastructure will be embedded into our physical world, with messaging and interactions that adapt to contextual needs and anticipate future moves. They will engage our whole bodies in multisensory ways, illuminate invisible patterns, and enable us to program our communications streams to optimize interactions and outcomes.
These technical advances will usher in a variety of new archetypal communication experiences that simultaneously stretch our perceptions of what is possible even as they build on today’s capabilities and long-standing human intentions. From popstars with digital agents designed to enhance their brands to intelligent furniture that bonds families across distances, these scenes may be unfamiliar today but they point to the kinds of experiences that will seem commonplace, even mundane, a decade from now.
