Must Read Links for Week Ending August 12
There's been a surprising amount of interesting news lately, considering that it's August: Europe is closed, and most of the US is at the beach...
In context-awareness, an interesting paper detailing a new technique for recognizing places through mobile devices was published by the Intel Seattle lablet, titled "Learning and recognizing the Places We Go". It opens the possibility to a future where our devices start recognizing when we're at home, or at work, or our favorite cafe, and adjust their own settings automatically. Intel researchers will present the work at UbiComp 2005 in Tokyo this September.
Also at UbiComp in Tokyo - a one day workshop on Ubiquitous Computing, Entertainment and Games, organized by USC professor Julian Bleecker who recently participated in IFTF's own workshop last week on pervasive gaming.
From Japan, we saw the announcement of a trial of proximity-based advertising (think Minority Report) using RFID in shpping malls.
As always, you can head over to del.icio.us to keep up to date with what IFTF researchers and the Tech Horizons team are reading online.
