Kenyan Undersea Fiber Optic Cable Launched
“The long-awaited East African Marine System (TEAMS) fibre optic
undersea cable, expected to cut telecommunications costs across the
continent has officially been launched in Kenya.”
For 130 million US dollars, the cable—which came by way of the
Indian Ocean from UAE—will connect East Africa to international
communications networks. President Kibaki of Kenya is already making
plans to train Kenya youth in ICT in the hopes of creating a generation
of digital natives and boosting economic development.
The TEAMS cable is among the growing global trend of public-private
partnership. This time between the Kenyan government and private UAE
companies.
As Kenya and the rest of the Global South build more infrastructure and continue to develop, the rate of energy consumption will continue to grow. I want nothing more that the rest of the world to have the opportunities we have always taken for granted, but how will we balance out the higher global consumption of resources and energy as countries continue to develop?
