A Map for Discovering and Making the Future

IFTF has been mapping the intersections between technology, the human experience, and the future for more than 44 years. We use these mapping methodologies in research processes to create frameworks for navigating complex systems of information, and we also recognize that maps can be powerful tools to create a common vision of a landscape and provide base for a shared or collective experience.

We were honored to partner with ZERO1, producer of the international biennial showcase of work at the nexus of art and technology taking place locally across the SF Bay Area from September through December 2012. The collaboration between our organizations was to create the Seeking Silicon Valley map to visualize not only the expansive network of Biennial activities and locations, but also to offer a landscape of four alternative future visions for the region. These alternative futures rooted in recent IFTF research are meant to both contribute to, and, inspire a dialogue of possibilities in a region synonymous with technology, innovation, and art.

“Silicon Valley is a place where people not only imagine futures, but actively create them in real-time through innovation,” says Jake Dunagan, the project leader. “This map and the biennial exhibition are truly about inspiring our region to think about possible alternative futures through a showcase of artists, designers, and creators who are providing a window into the future through their work.”
