Millennial Trains Project takes Governance Futures Lab across the USA
In August 2013, IFTF research affiliate Lindsea K. Wilbur took our Governance Futures Lab’s Social Inventors Toolkit across the United States. Lindsea joined a group of other young pioneers for the Millennial Trains Project, a journey that will carry innovative ideas and experiments for making a better world to 7 cities over 10 days.
Lindsea shared the Governance Futures Lab’s Social Inventor’s Toolkit at public forums in these cities:
- August 8—San Francisco, Freespace // 1131 Mission St.
- August 10—Salt Lake City
- August 12—Denver, Galvanize // 1062 Delaware St
- August 13—Omaha, KANEKO // 1111 Jones St
- August 15—Chicago, Grant Park // Seated Lincoln Statue
- August 16—Pittsburgh, Tech Shop // 192 Bakery Square Blvd
- August 17—D.C., National Mall // Lincoln Memorial

About the Project
Lindsea’s #GovFuturesUSA project will uncover new insights into how Americans think about government, and will use the Toolkit to spark new ideas for re-inventing governance:
I want to take the Governance Futures Lab across the country to examine our beliefs and assumptions about society, and create communities of co-inquiry. Holding DIY philosophy discussions in the style of Philosophy for Children Hawai'i, I'll act as a collaborative facilitator as we examine our beliefs about the basic foundations of society, human nature, and civic governance. The questions I'll be asking are being collected on the Tumblr Gov Futures Inquiry. Gov Futures Lab USA introduces DIY philosophy as an important tool for contextualization, critical thinking, and foresight. Promoting a culture of system and futures thinking in an intellectually safe environment, it creates social space for people to better understand their own beliefs, and apply critical thinking to some of the complex questions we face today. |
Lindsea will meet with community groups and local governments in the Bay Area, Salt Lake City, Denver, Omaha, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and DC, while collaborating with other project leaders and mentors aboard the train.

About the Governance Futures Lab
The Governance Futures Lab launched in 2013 to bring together civic entities, social inventors, and futures thinkers to inspire the design of better governance systems through a range of public activities and initiatives. Kicking off with the ReConstitutional Convention, the Lab created Governance for the Future: An Inventor's Toolkit—a four-step design process to re-think and create new systems of governance from the local to planetary scale. IFTF is sponsoring Lindsea and the Millennial Trains Project to catalyze research-based, future-focused action from social inventors around the US and beyond.
