Innovate2038: Remaking the Future of Research + Innovation

#Innovate2038

The traditional paths to R&D and innovation will not work for the critical challenges and new opportunities of 2038. Increasingly constrained resources, the rise of mega-cities, and rapidly shifting developments in business processes, regulations, and consumer sentiment will present epic challenges to business as usual, while at the same time, opportunities will abound.

On September 25 and 26, 2013, the Industrial Research Institute and IFTF invited the world to play Innovate2038, a fast-paced game on the future of R&D and technology innovation built on our Foresight Engine platform.

Today's emerging fields, like 3D-printing and additive manufacturing, synthetic biology, and data modeling, will catalyze the next generation of products, services, and markets—if research and innovation can lead the way. But managing all of these efforts will require new tools and technologies, new skills in project and talent management, new players and collaborations, and ultimately a collective re-imagining of the value proposition of research to society.

Inspired by watching the future scenario video, players explored some of the biggest questions:

  • What new skills will researchers and innovators need to quickly identify and solve problems and create breakthrough products?
  • How can businesses, universities, grassroots makers, bio-hackers, and micro-contributors from around the world work together?
  • How will we manage new collaborations in new models working on radically different platforms?

Game Statistics

September 2013

  • Registered Players = 543
  • Idea Cards Played = 9,958
  • Countries = 53
