Society: Active Learners Will Create a New Education Ecology in the United States
"More Americans than ever have high levels of formal education. In 2003, Census Bureau data report that 85% of Americans 25 and older had a high school diploma; almost 27% had a college degreen. These numbers reflect a steady rise in educational levels since the 1970s.
However, a focus on formal education misses several important trends outside the degree-granting system. These trends are converging to create a new education ecology that includes not only a range of forma and informal learning resources, but also a new kind of active learner. Over the next decade, this ecology will become increasingly rich and diverse, thanks to the interest of those who are already highly educated.
