"Shelves, now with built-in RFID"
This entry is a bit of a preview for memo #4 in the RFID+10 project (links to #1, #2, and #3) in which we explore the role RFID will play in finally bringing about the smart home. From the wonderful blog RFID in Japan comes word of a prototype of a glass shelf with an embedded RFID antenna. If RFID tags are to be as useful to consumers at home as they are to retailers on the store shelf, we'll need to see easy ways to get RFID antennae and readers into our dwellings. Newly built smart homes will soon come with these technologies included, while everyone else will likely retrofit through the piecemeal addition of RFID-enhanced objects, like the shelf (here's a larger image).
