Maker Cities and NYC Museum Media Labs
On May 17th and 24th in Manhattan, Alex Goldman of IFTF’s Maker Cities team will co-lead prototyping sessions exploring the future of art and museums in Maker Cities. In a partnership with the NYC Museum MediaLab Meetup, these workshops will offer skilled makers, artists, and museum enthusiasts the opportunity to produce exciting medium-fidelity prototypes of novel art interactions in near-future cities.
If we set aside the traditional view of art museums as places to store and view art, what new roles open up for these institutions in cities where creativity and culture happen block by block? How might 3D printing impact how artists can express themselves, when any public space can host a piece of art?
Both events will be 6 hours long and heavily prototyping-oriented, offering makers hands-on experience with testing their ideas. Using fresh technologies like 3D scanners and printers, Arduino kits, and more, participants will build their ideas from concept to demo piece, and then take photos of their piece “in action” on the blocks of New York City.
Join the Meetup group then RSVP to attend!
These events at the Uris Center Art Study Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 17th and 24th are a partnership between IFTF and the Museum MediaLab Meetup—only members may attend. If you live in New York City and have some hardcore making skills, we would absolutely love for you to join us—simply apply to the Meetup group and then RSVP to Session 1 and 2.
If you have any questions about the event, please email Alex Goldman at [email protected]. If you’re interested in the subject but unable to attend, or if prototyping is simply not your thing, after the event we’ll publish a blog post showcasing all the exciting prototypes.
Use Maker Cities for team play at your organization or event
The IFTF Maker Cities game launched in 2014 to quickly capture makers’ on-the-ground signals and future visions of how the Maker culture is changing our cities—your city. Play the game or ask us how to host a panel or discussion on the impact of the maker movement on cities at your organization and play as a team. Contact Alex at [email protected] or tweet to @iftf.
This post is part of IFTF's Maker Cities, a game for global makers. Our Technology Horizons program developed the game to ask the public, “How will your city be a Maker City in 2025?” Built with Ushihidi's repurposed open-source software originally designed for post-disaster mapping, Maker Cities is the first platform to quickly capture makers’ on-the-ground signals and future visions for Makers. Join us and play the game! Contact Sean Ness ([email protected]) for more information.
