Fighting for the Deep Edge: Protecting the Future of Internet Architecture

IFTF Second Curve Internet Speaker Series with Richard Whitt—November 11, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 pm

#reinventthenet [Powered by the Ten-Year Forecast]

"Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies."
             —Groucho Marx

All technology is imbued with values—deliberately-engineered qualities that mirror certain aspects of human behavior. And the Internet is no exception.

Join us November 11 from 6:00-8:00 pm as Richard Whitt discusses the code, people, and processes of the value-laden Internet, with an eye towards describing the recent shift in empowerment from the “core” of the network to users operating at its “deep edges.” Using the 2011-’12 SOPA/PIPA copyright battle in Congress as the backdrop, Rick will then outline the challenge facing the tech industry as it struggles to explain itself to government policymakers, both in Washington and elsewhere. How can we protect the key values of the Internet—including its open, interconnected, end-to-end design—when would-be regulators fail to appreciate or even understand them?
